Watch This: A Long List of Honorable Mentions from A Brief Stretch of Time

It’s been approximately a month and a half since the last volume of Watch This ran on this site. During the interim, there was a lull in coverage due to show coverage (the results of which will be appearing in the very near future) and then a spree to get the three main release categories — single streams, full streams, and music videos — caught back up to the current release cycle.

Now that everything’s back on pace, the Watch This series will be revived in a continuing series of posts that are spread out over the next week. During all of the time the series maintained radio silence, the material that was emerging was being taken into account on a near-daily basis. An intimidating amount of great live performance videos have surfaced in that time and will be split up into groups as those clips are recapped. Below is a list of strong candidates that have a lot to offer, either in the filmmaking department, through the band’s performances, or a mixture of both. March 2016: The Full Streams

Once more, a lot of material has surfaced since this site’s last regular update. A few premieres are in the (very) near future, though, as are a series of recaps. A few of those — like this very piece — will be limited to March, while the others will cover the first, very rich, quarter of 2016. Since so much has amassed in that period of time, a lot of these will simply be presented as lists with hyperlinks. As much as I wish I could grant all of these individual pieces the attention they genuinely deserve, the most I can do at this point is make sure they don’t go completely unnoticed. Now that both the songs and the full streams have received the massive overhaul treatment in an effort to get this site caught up to the current releases, it’s time to turn to music videos. A few key videos will be featured over the next few days but that shouldn’t take away from the merits of the clips listed below, which number near 200. Whether it was an outstanding song, concept, or visual presentation, something made the below videos stand out from the endless array of clips that I saw since the turn of the year. [EDITOR’S NOTE: With the site now entering emergency year-end catch-up mode thanks to the cruel, mocking nature of time, tonight’s trio of posts will simply be short reviews of the song(s) in the headline(s) and an accompanying list of tracks that deserve to be heard.]

2015’s been a genuinely overwhelming year for music. From records that ranked as irrefutable masterpieces to the emergence of deeply promising new acts, there was a lot to digest. This site’s dedicated to the latter of those two categories and even in isolating that grouping, there are still- undoubtedly- countless pieces missing. Fortunately, bed. aren’t one of those missing pieces because their recent “The Rule” is as captivating as any song this year. By balancing dream-pop aesthetics with flashes of elements more comfortably rooted in post-punk, sludge, and basement punk, they’ve subverted a dichotomy that’s paid hugely successful dividends for the songs that this site’s featured in the past. “The Rule”, the band’s strongest work to date, suggests that in addition to establishing their footing, they’ve got a lot more to offer. All we need to do for now is listen while we wait to find out and, fortunately, “The Rule” makes that an easy task.
