Vånna Inget – Inga frågor Inga svar (Music Video)

Vånna Inget are the latest band to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that great music is universal. Hailing from Sweden, they’ve already built up an impressive discography of exquisitely-crafted basement pop. While there are some subtle shoegaze and no wave elements incorporated into their music, the production value and fearlessness the band manages to exude separate them from their closest contemporaries. After releasing a straight-up classic with 2011’s Allvar, they’ve  followed it up with a darker variation on a record just as good; Ingen Botten.  Both Ingen Botten and the music video for lead-off single “Inga frågor Inga svar” are deserving of immediate attention. ” Inga frågor Inga svar” doesn’t contain much more than vocalist Karolina Engdahl walking and driving in a storm but it’s suffused with an overpowering sense of melancholy and a fair amount of inexplicable suspense. It’s all beautifully shot and immensely compelling considering its apparent simplicity. Watch the  strangely haunting video below.

Gap Dream – Shine Your Light (Music Video)

Burger Records is back at it again. After an absurdly huge 2013, they’ve still got a few aces hidden away. One of those is most certainly Gap Dream’s Shine Your Light, which is currently streaming over at Pitchfork Advance. Shortly after that stream went live the band unveiled a weirdly compelling music video for the title track that features an outstanding performance from Mr. Show‘s John Ennis as a hard-drinking detective who stumbles across an alien abduction plot. The Jonny Look-directed clip’s infused with the kind of psychedelic flourishes that permeate Gap Dream’s music, providing a level playing field where both audio and video complement each other to perfection. If nothing else, watch it for the outstanding facial expression at the 2:53 mark.

Stream the record (which is some of Gap Dream’s strongest work) by clicking the link to Pitchfork Advance in the above paragraph and watch the noir-inflected sci-fi video for “Shine Your Light” below. Pre-orders for Shine Your Light are available from Burger Records and the record’s available in several formats including a glow in the dark LP. Highly recommended.

Big Eyes – The Sun Still Shines (Music Video)

Big Eyes’ Almost Famous was one of the definitive albums of summer 2013, following up Hard Life with assured poise and a more refined sound. Earlier this week the band released a music video for “The Sun Still Shines” that features band leader Kate Eldridge (who’s continuing an absurd winning streak following Cheeky and Used Kids with her current act) behaving in a wildly unruly fashion. “The Sun Still Shines” music video is fashioned after B-roll slasher flicks and showcases the band’s goofier side. It all amounts to a great way to kill some time on a dreary Sunday. Almost Famous is available for order through Grave Mistake. Watch the video below.

Polvo – Light, Raking (Music Video)

Polvo’s Siberia was one of 2013’s most unexpected surprises. When that band starts clicking, they can go virtually unmatched in razor-sharp uneasiness and “Light, Raking” was one of Siberia‘s finest examples of this. Yesterday Filter premiered a strangely hypnotic video for the track that features a lot of stop-motion yarn, somehow amplifying the band’s most arresting emotional undercurrents. Like Shane Carruth’s Upstream Color before it, printed words simply can’t do justice to the strangely visceral experience it inspires. Watch “Light, Raking” below and pick up Siberia from Merge.

Albert Hammond Jr. – Carnal Cruise (Music Video)

Albert Hammond Jr. has continuously proven that he’s so much more than just a member of The Strokes. He’s quietly put together a solo discography that’s more consistent than his main vehicle’s and, frankly, one that’s more interesting.  Hammond extends this unlikely winning streak with AHJ, an EP that’s out now through Cult Records. Earlier today Complex premiered a colorful smoke-filled music video for EP standout “Carnal Cruise”.  The impossibly charming Laurent Briet-directed video’s general conceit is inspired and simplistic, featuring only Hammond mugging his way through a forest aided by a minimal use of image-bending special effects. Keep an eye out for the percussion breakdown at around 2:35. It’s magical.

You can watch it here.

Audacity – Hole in the Sky (Music Video)

Image

Fullerton, CA band Audacity has been cranking out gloriously enthusiastic garage pop for roughly 10 years. This week they put out their latest, Butter Knife, on both Burger Records and Suicide Squeeze. In addition to releasing Butter Knife the band also released a music video for standout track “Hole in the Sky”, which boasts several of the band’s signature musical staples along with a vintage visual palette. If you’re unfamiliar with the band, let this be your introduction to four young men who appear poised to be Superchunk’s natural anthemic successors.

You can catch Audacity live when they play The Empty Bottle in Chicago on 11/25 with fellow hell-raisers PUP and Hunters.
