2018: A Long Look, A Longer Listen (The First Two Months)

A persistent and all-consuming myth among people that refuse to commit a shred of investment to any sort of search is that “good music just doesn’t exist anymore.” It’s the same sort of thinking present in the cavalcade of thoughtless attempts to shift any sort of blame for societal ills to a younger generation based solely on an outlook that was defined by a vastly different era. Fortunately, there are a host of artists to emphatically disprove brand of thinking and act as a counter to what could be construed as a subtle, insidious form of ageism. Below there are literally hundreds of links providing access to various songs, music videos, and records.

All of them are worth a shot and a good many of them are vastly different from their surrounding links. Each of those items came out in 2018 and there’s an entire world more of them waiting to be discovered by the people willing to put in the work. So use these as a starter pack of sorts or just scroll through and see what today’s musicians can offer. It’s a boundless scope and when its allowed to not just exist but thrive, there are a multitude of reasons to celebrate. Enjoy.

Hermetic – Postscript (Album Review)

A lot can be released in a week’s time. Fortunately, that means there’s a lot of room for excellent material, like the music videos Lydia Loveless, Kamikaze Girls, Kino Kimino, Duncan LloydSløtface, White Reaper, Mise en Scene, TV Sets, Angelo De Augustine, Guerilla Toss, Thick, and Brightness made public. More than just music videos surfaced, though, and — as always — a lot of what cropped up came from unheralded or barely-known artists. Hermetic was one of those projects but Postscript, the project’s latest full-length, proved that they’re worthy of recognition.

A duo comprised of Eric Axen and Bart Newman, Hermetic find success on Postscript by meticulously mining a lot of aspects of post-punk, bedroom pop, and their various niche hybrid offshoots that tend to get overlooked. From Albini-esque production and tones to palpable nervous tension to the dynamic composition, Postscript never comes across as anything less than ridiculously historically-informed. Hermetic’s done their homework and it shows from the record’s surprisingly heavy opening track, “Fault-Finding Mission” which brings to mind both acts like The Wrens and an innumerable slate of shoegaze-leaning projects.

Following Postscript‘s ridiculously impressive opening statement are a cavalcade of tracks that throw a variety of punches, finding clever ways to land each blow. Hermetic rarely dips out of insistent mid-tempo mode throughout the course of the record and it creates an absorbing accumulative effect. Everything from the ambient swirl of “Relics” to the moody mid-song turn in “Withering” is elevated because of the record’s tonal consistency. Each track has something to offer and stands out on its own but they create a much larger whole together. It’s an outstanding release from a band that deserves a lot more attention. Hit play and leave it on repeat.

Heather Woods Broderick – Home Winds (Music Video)

Last week, there were great videos to emerge from some reliably excellent camps, like those of Ty Segall, Grandaddy, Sam Craighead, Damn Jackals, Forest Swords, Jacky Boy, and Molly Nilsson. Another artist to offer up a new clip was Heather Woods Broderick, whose knack for the format hasn’t gone unnoticed. Broderick’s latest, a clip presented as a tie-in to the fascinating Home Winds project, boasts gorgeous cinematography and direction from Jeffrey Rowles. A characteristically majestic song from Broderick plays over the nature-heavy footage, giving “Home Winds” an appropriate sense of sweeping grandeur. Quiet, meditative, and gentle, it’s hard to shake but even harder to want to shake at all, leaving “Home Winds” as another in a string of Broderick’s unassuming triumphs.

Dogheart – Real Mood (EP Review)

dogheart

Editor’s Note: There’s been a month-long gap in coverage, thanks to near-incessant travel and other extenuating circumstances. The following run of posts that contain this note will be posts that should have appeared sometime within the past several weeks. Use these posts as an opportunity to catch up to the present release cycle or to simply discover some new music. Either way, enjoy.

Now a handful of releases into their career, Dogheart continue to steadily improve and Real Mood is the current culmination of that improvement. Restrained basement pop that packs a serious amount of punch exists squarely in this site’s pleasure center and Dogheart have been releasing gems for that particular niche genre for the past three years. While a lot of those recordings have been impressive, the band’s staked out a strong footing for Real Mood that feels just a little bit stronger.

Everything Dog Heart tries out over the course of these six tracks works, usually they’re subtle flourishes that wind up unifying Real Mood. The EP also works, and was clearly conceived, as a whole. While individual songs could be stripped out for mixtapes and retain their power, packaged together they each become more powerful. What’s most surprising about the EP is how understated and grounded its songs wind up being, adding a layer of intrigue that readily invites returns.

Real Mood is a strong collection of songs that stealthily gain impact, creating the kind of pull that’s hard to ignore. It’s an impressive feat and it transforms Real Mood from what could have easily been a relatively minor release into something that registers as important. Don’t miss out on the party.
